Approach

(All Saints, Williamsburg) Church architecture is rooted so far into history that the values of its approach should be understood. This neo-gothic only dates back to 1894, it was built for the thousands of German immigrants who were the majority Catholic in Brooklyn. Something about its durability and detailing gives pause to its viewer. How can a run-of-the mill cross shaped building have such strong impact? For one; the soaring brick tower evokes a strong sense of grounding to this busy intersection. It is clearly a presence. In addition; the immaculately crisp quatrefoil is so well detailed and well constructed it looks as new as the day it was built. The architects choice of materials, subtle brick backing with terracotta details and metal tin roofing helps the building stand the test of time. The approach was as simple as build a congregation for gathering however its execution and longevity make it shine. There are many other Catholic churches by this Architect in the New York city and they all look as nice & new as this one. Don’t underestimate the everyday-building’s capability to hold powerful meaning.
